Accompanying this Instagram pic posted by Matt Wilkinson on Twitter was the caption “Fags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Imagine if any other pro athlete in a mainstream sport said this. They’d be tarred and feathered in the media. Like if Lebron James jokingly called Chris Bosh and Mike Miller “Fags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” over Twitter, talk shows, radio hosts, and everyone else in the media would have a field day. Nike would drop Lebron or at the very least he’d be forced to give a very earnest apology.
But I guess that’s why we like surfing. It’s still kinda on the cusp, and surfers are not politically correct. And so we have snorkeling.
Matt Wilkinson going backside, Brett Simpson going frontside, on some pretty rippable surf. Looks fun.
The video is called Winky Pop goes green. No idea what that means or what or where Winky Pop is.
I like seeing videos where you see more than one guy on a wave and navigating crowds as it’s more realistic to me.
Matt Wilkinson wins the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime Event in Brazil. Here’s a quick recap of the semis and finals from Yahoo:
“Heat 1 of the semifinals saw Aussie Kai Otton match quivers with American Kolohe Andino. Otton drew 1st blood with a 4 point ride. He followed it up with a low scoring wave while Andino seemed to be surveying the horizon for the right moment to strike. He finally found a wave that he liked and grabbed 4.67 points.
Otton answered back with another nice set filled with sweeping carves deep into the bowl. It earned him another 6.67 points which he followed up with a sweet 6.33 point wave. It gave him a comfortable lead. Andino tried to make inroads by catching a chandelier barrel out the back. He hacked it off of the top and ended up with 2.33 points for his efforts. It just wasn’t enough and Otton won the heat with a final score of 13.
Heat 2 of the semifinals was between Aussie Matt Wilkinson and Hawaiian Keanu Asing. Asing struck first and grabbed a quick 8.83 points. He threw a lot of water and smashed the lip with authority. Wilkinson answered back by smashing a wave of his own. It garnered him 7.93 points. He followed it up with a 2.77 point ride that put him into the lead.
Towards the end of the heat, Wilkinson unleashed a series of powerful hacks that netted him a sweet 9.83 points. I was awe-struck. He displayed a lot of power, skill and determination. In the end, Matt Wilkinson won the heat with a cool 17.76 points. It was my favorite exchange of the semifinals.
Final Results
After the semifinals, fans found themselves treated to an all Aussie final. It was between Kai Otton and Matt Wilkinson. Otton started it off by catching a series of low scoring waves. He kept going over the handlebars and appeared to be exhausted. I felt bad for him because he had done so well earlier in the competition.
Wilkinson was allegedly dealing with a health issue of his own but it didn’t stop him from blowing out the tail on a solid 9.50 point ride. I was really impressed with Wilkinson’s performance. He appeared to be having a blast. He followed it up with a sweet looking lip smack and a tail drift that helped him earn another 7.17 points. Then he nailed an 8.93 point ride and an 8.17 point ride. It gave him a handsome lead that left Otton struggling to keep up. In the end, Wilkinson won the final with an eye-popping score of 18.43. Otton finished the heat with a score of 8.63.”
A good surf video requires great music. This video has pretty decent surfing by Matt Wilkinson, but it’s the music that I like. We need more rap + surf videos. Especially when they mix in a Ghostface Killah or other Wu-Tang beat. Enough emo and hipster, give us more RZA nad GZA.
Slow day for good surf videos… Here’s Matt Wilkinson surfing.
