Peter Mel on Winning Mavericks

Amidst inconsistent surf, Pete Mel finally won the Mavericks Invitational.

But he’ll be taking home the same prize money as the last place finisher. Before the competition even started, all the competitors agreed to split the prize money, says Mel in a Surfer interview.

Asked if the competition should have run in the less than ideal surf, Mel said that he had confidence in the contest directors and their ability to call swells.

On tow-in surfing, Mel acknowledged that it had its time in the sun, but it’s all about paddling now.

Kelly Slater Out at Mavericks

Kelly Slater out at Mavericks!

Oh no!

Shane Dorian is out too.

Dorian was injured recently on his Portugal trip.

While Slater cites a conflict with the ASP.

Apparently, the Mavericks Invitational is part of the Big Wave World Tour and the ASP will fine/penalize Slater if he participates in this non-ASP-sanctioned event.

Despite losing its two biggest stars, Mavericks is set for tomorrow amidst perfect weather and conditions.

Kelly Slater Set for Mavericks Invitational

Here is the heat draw for the Mavericks Invitational which could go off this weekend [update: likely to go this Sunday w/ 25+ foot waves]:

Heat 1: Peter Mel, Dave Wassel, Mark Healey, Kelly Slater, Ken ‘Skindog’ Collins, Rusty Long
Heat 2: Chris Bertish, Jamie Sterling, Grant Washburn, Shawn Dollar, Nathan Fletcher, Matt Ambrose
Heat 3: Tyler Smith, Ryan Augenstein, Zach Wormhoudt, Shane Dorian, Greg Long, Ryan Seelbach
Heat 4: Alex Martins, Anthony Tashnick, Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, Ben Wilkinson, Carlos Burle, Shane Desmond

The obvious glory heat is Heat 1 even if Kelly Slater wasn’t a part of the draw. But having King Kelly involved kind of out of his element only adds to the excitement.
